4th of July DIY – Under $10
Still need the perfect thing to wear for 4th of July this weekend? It’s DIY Friday so here are few easy and affordable ways to create some festive fashions for under $10 an outfit!
Flag T-Shirt or Tank:
Supplies:
- White shirt or tank top – I found two options at Walmart for an affordable $1.68 or $3.50
- Painter’s tape
- Star stickers
- Blue and red spray paint
- A few pieces of cardboard
Step 1:
Start by taping up your tank top and applying the star stickers to create your desired American flag pattern. I chose to make the top third of my tank stars and the remainder stripes.
Once your tank is taped, slide a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to avoid accidentally spraying the backside, cover the stars portion with another piece of cardboard, and spray the visible stripes portion with red spray paint. For dark, solid stripes, apply a thick coat close to the shirt. For a lighter, more airbrushed appearance, spray a lighter coat from a greater distance.
Give the red paint a few minutes to dry, then cover it with a piece of cardboard and uncover the unpainted stars portion of the shirt. Spray this section with the blue spray paint.
Step 3: Allow the paint to dry completely, remove the tape and stickers, and you’re ready to go!
Matching Family Tanks – Kid Friendly DIY:
Supplies:
- White shirt or tank top
- Paint brush
- Red and blue fabric paint
- A few pieces of cardboard
Step 1:
Use a paper plate to pour blue paint into. Have kids press their hand into the blue paint and then press their handprint onto the top left side of the tank top.
Step 2:
Dip paint brush into red fabric paint and dot across to paint horizontal red stripes starting from the index finger of the handprint to the right-hand side of the tank top. Paint about six stripes of red paint starting from the top of the hand and end with two full length stripes underneath the handprint. Let the paint dry and then you’re ready to celebrate in style!
DIY Flag Jean Shorts: Supplies:
- Pair of Jean Shorts
- Star Stamp
- White and Red Fabric Paint
- Paint Brush or Foam Paint Brush
Step 1:
Use star stamp and foam paint brush to stamp white stars onto the left-hand side of the jean shorts.
Dip paint brush into red fabric paint and paint vertical red stripes on the right-hand side of the jean shorts. Let the paint dry and then you’re ready to celebrate in style!
If you don’t have a pair of jeans that you want to cut up and paint, run over to a second-hand store and see if you can find a pair of shorts or inexpensive jeans to use. I bought three pairs at the Goodwill Outlet for just $1 each. I washed them as soon as I got home, snipped off the legs and voila a perfect pair of jeans to DIY for 4th of July!
